Who Is This Test For?

This test is designed for people who are at risk for carrying the Hepatitis B virus:

Have received a tattoo using unsterilised equipment

Have ever injected drugs

Have ever had unprotected sexual contact with an HBV infected person

Live with someone who has hepatitis B

Have a mother or close family member with hepatitis B

Born outside New Zealand, from a high risk country

Māori, Pacific Island or Asian ethnicity

Any person over 35 years of age

This test is not suitable if you:

You are acutely symptomatic in any way

Have had contact with bodily fluids from a person who is known to have Hepatitis B or any other sexually transmitted or blood born infections (e.g HIV or Syphillis)

Have a known diagnosis of Hepatitis B

What’s Included in These Tests?

Hepatitis B screening tests include:

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen

Checks if you have an active infection with the hepatitis B virus

Hepatitis B Surface Antibody

Checks if your body has created protective antibodies against the Hepatitis B virus

Additional Testing

If you test positive for Hepatitis B, further tests will be ordered to evaluate the status of infection.
