How It Works
Choose your condition and book a video consultation at a time that suits you.
Fill out a brief questionnaire and complete payment.
Attend your consultation and receive prescriptions, lab test requests, or medical certificates if required.
What is a General Consultation?
A general consultation is a flexible appointment where you can talk to a doctor about any non-urgent health concern. It might involve checking new symptoms, following up on a previous issue, reviewing medications, or getting advice on next steps. It’s suitable for most everyday health needs that don’t require an in-person exam.

What Conditions Are Suited To A General Consultation?
General consultations are best when:
You’re unsure what’s going on and want a doctor’s opinion.
Your condition isn’t listed under our specific treatment categories.
Your condition is listed but complicated for other reasons.
If you already know what you need help with you can book directly through our Condition-Based Services.

What's not suitable For A General Consultation?
While telehealth can manage most everyday health issues, it’s not suitable for:
Medical emergencies
Life-threatening symptoms
Situations requiring a physical exam or hands-on assessment
If you're experiencing a serious medical issue — including chest pain, difficulty breathing, or mental health crises — call 111 immediately and request an ambulance.
For urgent or complex care that needs an in-person assessment, we recommend visiting your regular GP, after-hours clinic, or nearest hospital.

Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between a general consultation and a condition-specific consultation?
A general consultation is a flexible 15-minute appointment where you can talk to a doctor about any non-urgent health concern.
A condition-specific consultation is a shorter, 10-minute appointment for treating a single, known issue (like thrush or a UTI). Because it’s more focused, it takes less time and costs less — making it a quick and affordable option when you know exactly what you need help with.
Can I get a prescription, medical certificate, or referral during my consultation?
Yes — during either consultation type, your doctor can provide prescriptions (sent to any NZ pharmacy), medical certificates (emailed to you directly), and referrals or lab tests if needed. All services are completed on the same day.
Can I get a Wegovy prescription in a general consultation?
No — if you're seeking treatment with Wegovy please book our dedicated weight loss consultation instead.
This ensures your doctor has the time and context to assess your medical history, treatment goals, and suitability for Wegovy.
Can I talk about mental health in a general consultation?
No. For mental health concerns, we recommend booking one of our dedicated mental health consultations instead of a general one. It’s a 30-minute appointment designed to give you the time, space, and support needed to have a proper conversation with your doctor.
This ensures we can provide the best care possible without rushing important discussions.
What if I need help choosing which consultation to book?
If you're unsure, a general consultation is usually the best starting point. Our doctors can clarify your issue and guide you from there. You can also contact our support team at hello@pocketlab.nz if you need help choosing.
