Not always! Most sinus infections are caused by viruses, not bacteria—meaning antibiotics won’t help and might even do more harm than good.
Viral sinus infections are more common and usually clear up within 10 days without antibiotics. Symptoms include congestion, runny nose, and mild facial pain or pressure. Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter meds can manage symptoms effectively.
Bacterial sinus infections are less common but may require antibiotics. Signs include severe symptoms lasting more than 10 days, a high fever (above 102°F), and symptoms that worsen after initially improving. This is known as a “double-sickening” pattern.
Using antibiotics unnecessarily can contribute to antibiotic resistance, making future infections harder to treat. That’s why it’s important not to rush into antibiotics unless your doctor confirms a bacterial cause.
