Frequently asked questions
Can Pocket Lab prescribe any type of medication?
Our doctors can prescribe most regular medications, especially if you are unable to see your usual GP. However, Pocket Lab doctors do not prescribe certain medications that are considered high risk or require in-person assessment. This includes:
Strong pain relief medications
Medications used for sleep, stress, or sedation
Medications with potential for dependency
Certain medications used for weight loss or ADHD

We also cannot prescribe medications that require Medsafe approval for individual use. These prescriptions are best managed by your regular doctor or a specialist.
How can I get a prescription online in New Zealand?
You can get a prescription online through Pocket Lab by booking a quick video consultation with one of our New Zealand registered doctors. Just select the prescription service, choose a time that suits you, and speak to a doctor from your phone or computer. If approved, your prescription will be sent directly to your chosen pharmacy.
How much medication can I get with a Pocket Lab prescription?
Our online doctors can prescribe up to 3 months’ supply of regular medications and up to 6 months’ supply of hormonal contraceptives, depending on your clinical needs. This applies to both New Zealand residents and international visitors using Pocket Lab.
How fast will I receive my prescription?
Prescriptions are sent electronically during your video consultation and usually received by your chosen pharmacy within minutes. In most cases, you can collect your medication on the same day, depending on the pharmacy’s hours and stock availability. Just let us know your preferred pharmacy, and we’ll send it directly there for you.
Can I get a prescription if I am travelling in New Zealand?
Yes. Pocket Lab is ideal for travellers needing a prescription while in New Zealand. Our doctors can send your script to a nearby pharmacy, and you’ll pay for the medication when you collect it. Some overseas medications may not be available here, but our doctors can recommend a local alternative if needed.
