What is Conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis happens when the conjunctiva becomes inflamed. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, allergens (like pollen), or irritants (like smoke or chlorine). While it’s often mild, it can be uncomfortable and contagious, especially if caused by infection.

For Allergic Conjunctivitis

  • Antihistamine eye drops

  • Avoid known triggers (e.g. pollen, dust)

  • Cold compress to relieve itching

For Bacterial Conjunctivitis

  • Antibiotic eye drops (e.g. chloramphenicol)

  • Clean eyelids with warm water

  • Avoid contact lens use until cleared

For Viral Conjunctivitis

  • Usually resolves on its own within 1–2 weeks
