About

  • Vitamin D is an important nutrient that helps us absorb calcium from the stomach and helps with the function of calcium in our body. It helps keep our bones strong, our muscles working well and has other helpful roles in our body.

  • 90% of vitamin D is produced through skin exposure to sunlight, and 10% through diet.

  • Most people with low vitamin D don’t have any symptoms. If prolonged and severe, vitamin D deficiency may lead to bone conditions such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults; these are uncommon conditions.

  • You can find out more about vitamin D here.

Important testing information

  • Vitamin D testing in New Zealand has strict criteria for who can get a government funded vitamin D test.

  • They are considered for certain groups of people such as those at high risk of rickets or osteomalacia (eg. cystic fibrosis, proven malabsorption, bariatric surgery, refugees, deeply pigmented skin, full veil wearers). If you think you might meet the criteria of a funded test please discuss this with your regular doctor.

  • You can still request a vitamin D test with Pocket Lab if you do not meet the funded criteria but you will need to pay for the test yourself when you present to the lab testing centre. The additional cost at the lab is approximately $61.50 for the test + $22 bleeding fee.
